Eligibility
The Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) and Symantec® AntiVirus (SAV) software is free to all University of Toronto faculty and staff for both on- and off-campus computers. The software must be removed from the computer when the owner no longer has one of the above relationships with the University.
To get the SEP or SAV software, you must have a UTORid and password. Either create or activate your UTORid at http://www.utorid.utoronto.ca/.
Why Use Anti-virus Software?
Computer viruses can cause a lot of damage to your computer. For example they can delete files, reformat hard drives, or be used to gain access to your accounts (such as email) and any personal data you store in those accounts. If you install antivirus software and keep it up-to-date, you can minimize these risks.
New viruses are appearing all the time. Once installed, the SEP or SAV software we provide will check for updates (automatically on a schedule or manually whenever you choose). At the same time, because new viruses may appear before Symantec can provide updates to protect you from these viruses, you should regularly back up your computer data and system.
This software is specifically configured for individuals who are responsible for their own computers. If you have someone in your department responsible for the maintenance of your computer (installing software, fixing hardware and software problems, handling network connectivity, etc.), your local support person will install the SAV software on your computer—you do not have to download anything. Contact your local computer support staff for additional information. (Computer/network system administrators can obtain a version of the software designed for their requirements at http://download.utoronto.ca/NAV).
Support: Where to Get Help
The Information Commons Help Desk – help.desk@utoronto.ca, 416-978-HELP (4357) provides help with the installation and the normal operation of the software. (For faster service, please include your Library number and UTORid with your question) However, neither the vendor nor the Information Commons can restore your computer’s data and configuration if it becomes corrupted by a virus. You are strongly advised to have a working backup of your system before attempting an installation.
The Symantec AntiVirus software is centrally funded by the University of Toronto.
